RELATIVELY WE...
By Brendan Healy
Directed by
Daniel Shea
Caterers swarm about their home as Vanessa and Howard—a retired beauty queen and a mid-level senator—prepare for a luxurious banquet to celebrate their pending nuptials. Vanessa’s son, Johnnie, an amateur physicist, doesn’t approve of the wedding, however. The evening looks to be in even greater peril when a couple of Vanessa’s ex-lovers come for the party. The event deteriorates into chaos as five love affairs blossom and implode among a bevy of cocktails, golfing, poker, baths, physics lectures, history lessons, beach parties and even nuclear explosions. Tossing in a train or two, Relatively We... or Loneliness Built the Bomb or How Einstein Wrote Hamlet or We’re All Going To Die Anyway So Why Can’t You Say You Love Me Now and Why Can’t I Get a Home Loan or Find a Bagel That Costs What I Think It Should explores in one evening, with 8 characters and one country song, all the wonderful and dreadful potential that exists in all of us. Playwright Brendan Healy lives and works in Chicago, IL. He is studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he will complete his MFA in Writing in December. Several of his one-acts have been produced in Iowa, New York, Chicago and elsewhere. Recently, Brendan was a co-recipient of the 2004 Heideman Award from Actors Theatre of Louisville.
